A child with a fever of 38°C is considered to have a low fever. If the child is in good spirits and has no loss of comfort due to fever, parents can temporarily dispense with fever-reducing medication and can use physical cooling by wiping the child’s forehead, palms, feet, armpits, groin and other parts of the body with a warm towel. You can also give your child a warm bath or soak his or her feet in warm water. If the child’s comfort level decreases due to fever and his or her mental state is poor, parents can give the child oral antipyretic medication, which can be either ibuprofen or acetaminophen, with one of the two medications. After taking the antipyretic medicine, give the child more warm water and let the child sweat, which will help to cool down the temperature. However, do not sweat too much as this may cause hypothermia or dehydration. Parents are reminded that if their child has recurrent fever, they must take their child to the hospital for routine blood tests, C-reactive protein and other related tests, so that targeted treatment can be given according to the cause of the illness.
