Can a hernia affect pregnancy?

Young female patients with hernia, mostly congenital, are best treated with hernia surgery if they are planning to get pregnant. Otherwise, as the pressure in the abdominal cavity increases with pregnancy, the hernia may increase in size and lead to the possibility of hernia entrapment, and the contents of the hernia are mostly small intestine, which may become entrapped and cause intestinal necrosis, requiring emergency surgery and a lot of medication before and after surgery, which may affect the fetus and even cause serious complications, such as miscarriage. In order to be safe, it is recommended to treat the hernia first and then get pregnant. For safety reasons, it is recommended that hernia surgery be performed before pregnancy. The author has many patients who undergo surgery every year, and all of them can safely survive pregnancy after surgery.
