In recent years, surgical treatment of diabetes, especially “gastric diversion” surgery for diabetes, has gradually gained attention and become the focus of publicity in some hospitals, and there are even advertisements for a one-stroke cure for diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic disease that is the result of the interaction between genetic inheritance and lifestyle, and the complications of diabetes are almost inevitable due to the unsatisfactory control of drugs and lifestyle, which is why patients are constantly looking for the “magic formula” to treat diabetes. So can surgery cure diabetes? The answer is yes, and surgery is far more effective than medication in treating diabetes. 94% of diabetic patients at our center recovered completely after surgery, and their blood sugar was completely normal without insulin or other medications. Of course surgery does not apply to all patients. What is the principle of surgery for diabetes? Currently there are foregut theory, hindgut theory, gastrointestinal hormonal changes, etc. But the result is certain, that most of the patients return to normal blood sugar after surgery, get rid of medications and avoid diabetic complications. So who are suitable for surgery? 1, obese diabetes, surgery benefits not only in blood sugar reduction, while solving other complications of obesity: hyperlipidemia, hyperuricemia, fatty liver, etc., the effect is the best, the surgery should be gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy. 2. Patients with normal weight and good islet function can choose surgery after strict preoperative screening, and in our metabolic surgery center we can choose gastric bypass or sleeve plus duodenojejunostomy bypass. So when is the best time to choose surgery? The current clinical results prove that early intervention and surgery are effective, but for patients with more than 10 years, only some of them have good islet cell function. After the surgery, is it a permanent solution that you will never get diabetes again? Can I eat as much as I want? It is true that in clinical practice we see many patients who eat normally after surgery, even without avoiding sugar intake, and still have normal blood sugar. However, for those patients who are older and have poor pancreatic islet function, they still need to control their diet after surgery so that they can stay normal for a longer period of time. How can I know if I am suitable for surgery? It is recommended to go to a qualified major hospital for examination, choose those centers of excellence, a regular hospital is your minimum guarantee, don’t consult a doctor indiscriminately and put your health in the hands of a trustworthy doctor.
