The three tonics and three diarrheals in Liu Wei Di Huang Wan characterize the formula, i.e. tonification with diarrhea. Medicines that tonify the liver, spleen and kidney are combined with those that clear the liver and diarrhea, seep away dampness and subdue turbidity. Through this method of compounding, the prescription can exert better therapeutic efficacy.
Six-flavored Di Huang Pill is composed of Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum, Rhizoma Dioscoreae, Rhizoma Dioscoreae, Poria, and Zedoaria. It has the effect of nourishing yin and tonifying the kidney. It is used for kidney yin deficiency, dizziness, tinnitus, lumbar and knee pain and weakness, bone vapor and tidal fever (a burst of heat, feeling that the heat comes from the inside of the bone to the outside), night sweating (sweating abnormally after going to sleep, and then waking up sweating stops), spermatorrhea, and so on.
Six-flavored Dihuang Pill is a commonly used proprietary Chinese medicine in clinical practice. The three tonic refers to the cooked dihuang, Chinese yam, and cornelian cherry meat in the prescription, which have the effect of tonifying the Yin of the liver, spleen, and kidneys; and the three diarrheal refers to the ze diarrhea, danpi, and poria in the prescription, which can prevent nourishment from producing stagnation and greasiness.
The combination of three tonic and three diarrhea in Liu Wei Di Huang Wan can better treat the condition of liver and kidney yin deficiency. It is a good combination to avoid the side effects caused by tonic drugs.
If you need to take Liuwei Di Huang Wan, it is recommended that you follow your doctor’s instructions.
