What does it mean to have a perceptual disorder?

When there is an abnormal change or malfunction in a person’s perception, it is called a perceptual disorder. Sensation and perception are collectively known as perceptions, which are the basis of human understanding of the world. Sensation refers to the reflection of individual attributes of objective things in the human brain through the sense organs. Sensory disorders of diminished or absent sensation or sensory hypersensitivity are most often seen in neurological disorders. Such as multiple peripheral neuropathy, the end of the limbs have sock-like sensation; transverse myelitis patients have spinal cord damage below the plane of the limbs, trunk sensory loss. Perception is the overall impression formed by objective things acting on the sensory organs and their various attributes synthesized in the human brain with the help of past experience. Perceptual disorders are common in patients with psychological abnormalities, epilepsy and schizophrenia, mainly manifested as illusions, hallucinations and perceptual syndrome disorders, which can cause abnormal behaviors such as panic, refusal to eat, running away, suicide or injury. When patients experience the above symptoms, it is recommended that they seek timely medical examination to clarify the cause of the disease and follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment.
