Acute bacterial mumps is not an infectious disease and is not contagious. Mumps is contagious and is an acute respiratory infection caused through the infected mumps virus. Mumps is clinically characterized by non-purulent parotid gland enlargement, which is centered on the earlobe and swells forward, backward and downward, and occurs mainly in children and adolescents. It can develop throughout the year, mainly in spring. The high incidence season is from February to May each year, and can cause outbreaks in densely populated places, such as military barracks and classrooms. There are no specific antiviral drugs for mumps virus, and the main treatment is symptomatic. If high fever occurs, physical or medication can be used to lower the temperature, and analgesics can be given when pain occurs.
