What’s that itchy ear?

Itchy ears may be a normal physiological phenomenon, or it may be a symptom of certain diseases, such as mycotic otitis externa, extra-auricular eczema, etc., and the cause should be identified in a timely manner. 1. Physiological factors: Cerumen (earwax) in the external auditory canal may stimulate the nerves of the external auditory canal in the process of movement, and itchy ears may appear. 2. Pathologic factors: (1) Mycotic otitis externa is a chronic inflammation of the external auditory canal and tympanic membrane caused by infection with mycobacteria. When the external auditory canal is infected by mold, the common symptom is itching in the ear; and when the mold invades the tympanic membrane, the patient may have tinnitus, hearing impairment and other symptoms. (2) Eczema of the outer ear may be caused by the consumption of allergenic foods such as eggs and seafood, or by the patient’s anxiety or depression, which may lead to eczema of the outer ear, resulting in a sudden itching of the ear; the skin of the outer ear canal may also become flaky, accompanied by a burning sensation and other symptoms. There may also be other factors causing the condition, but this symptom alone is not enough to diagnose the disease. It is recommended that if physiological causes are ruled out, the patient should consult a doctor to clarify the cause of the disease and give targeted treatment.
