Patients with a small hole in the ear and an inflammatory condition need to be treated and controlled with antibiotics, usually penicillin or cephalosporin, and depending on the severity of the local inflammation, oral or intravenous anti-infection treatment can be chosen accordingly. The condition of congenital preauricular fistula, which is a common congenital malformation of the ear, is often associated with the occurrence of this small hole in the ear. Secondary infection of the preauricular fistula can lead to localized congestion, swelling and pain. In some patients, a local abscess may develop, requiring further incision and drainage. Patients also often require further surgical treatment after the inflammation is completely cured.
