There is no difference in efficacy between Lu Codonopsis and Codonopsis, they are both one kind of plant; there are two kinds of Codonopsis, the wild one is called Wild Tai Codon and the cultivated one is called Lu Codonopsis. Codonopsis has the effects of tonifying the middle Jiao (treating qi deficiency by tonifying the spleen), generating fluids and nourishing blood (replenishing the body’s water and blood). It can treat loss of appetite, diarrhea, and weakness of the limbs caused by qi deficiency of the spleen and stomach, and it can also treat shortness of breath, coughing and panting, and weak voice caused by deficiency of the lungs’ qi. Codonopsis can also be taken for dry mouth and thirst caused by heat illness that damages the fluid; this product also has the effect of tonifying qi and nourishing blood, which can treat yellowish color (yellowish and lusterless), dizziness and palpitation (rapid heartbeat, often accompanied by panic) caused by blood deficiency. Codonopsis is a tonic, so it is forbidden to take it if there is internal dampness or solid heat; generally there is no adverse reaction; radish should not be eaten while taking it. If there is a need for medication, one should consult a Chinese medicine practitioner for evidence-based guidance and follow the doctor’s instructions.
