What is extrapyramidal disease

Extrapyramidal disorders, or movement disorders, are manifested by abnormal changes in the nuclei of the basal ganglia of the brain, including the caudate nucleus, the shell nucleus, the pallidum, the thalamus, the medulla and the red nucleus. The disease is associated with genetic mutations and occurs in young children and older adults, and older patients may be at risk for conversion to Parkinson’s disease. Therefore, if elderly patients present with idiopathic tremor, they should seek prompt medical attention to identify the type of disease and provide early targeted treatment to prevent adverse prognosis.
