Swollen and painful eyes cannot be ruled out as a viral infection, but microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi can also cause infections that lead to swollen and painful eyes. This is usually accompanied by photophobia, burning sensation, tearing, foreign body sensation and increased discharge.
