How soon can you walk after meniscus tear surgery

Generally, you can walk on the ground 6 hours after a meniscal tear, but it usually takes about 1-3 months to regain normal weight-bearing function or motor function, depending on the procedure. If arthroscopic meniscectomy or meniscectomy is performed, you will be able to walk with full weight bearing 6 hours after surgery, as soon as you wake up from anesthesia. Of course, it is not recommended to walk too much during the first month because there is a tendency for some blood to accumulate in the knee joint just after surgery and too much walking can cause swelling. In the case of arthroscopic meniscus suture surgery, it is not recommended that the patient walk with weight on the ground for 1 month. It is recommended that the patient should have the lower extremity externally fixed in a plaster cast for 1 month after surgery, and then walk semi-weight-bearing with crutches after 1 month, and basically return to normal walking in about 3 months. After meniscal tear surgery, it is necessary to avoid early weight-bearing and strenuous exercise, and to actively carry out functional exercises of the lower limb muscles during the bed-rest period to prevent muscle atrophy and deep vein thrombosis.
