Primary trigeminal neuralgia versus secondary

Trigeminal neuralgia refers to the recurrent, transient and paroxysmal severe pain distributed in the face, mouth or jaw area, and can be divided into primary trigeminal neuralgia and secondary trigeminal neuralgia, and the difference between the two is mainly reflected in the cause, symptoms, and different treatment methods.
1. Different causes: primary trigeminal neuralgia usually refers to the inability to find a clear cause or the current research has not yet found the cause of the disease; secondary trigeminal neuralgia is caused by other diseases, such as trigeminal nerve sheath tumor caused by the two have a causal relationship.
2. Different symptoms: primary trigeminal neuralgia refers to the recurrent paroxysmal, transient and severe pain in the distribution area of trigeminal nerve, without symptoms of trigeminal nerve destruction; secondary trigeminal neuralgia, the pain time is longer than that of primary trigeminal nerve, which can be accompanied by facial numbness and decreased sensation of the affected side.
3. Different treatments: primary trigeminal neuralgia usually focuses on the treatment of the disease; secondary trigeminal neuralgia requires the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia along with the treatment of causative diseases, such as trigeminal nerve sheath tumors, etc. When the disease causing trigeminal neuralgia improves, the trigeminal neuralgia usually improves or disappears, and the damage to the body is also under control.
Trigeminal neuralgia requires active medical treatment to identify the specific cause and then carry out targeted treatment.
