The chances of a woman getting pregnant on the first day of intercourse during the fertile period are relatively high, but not 100% certain. If the patient does not have a childbearing requirement, it is recommended that the patient take the emergency contraceptive pill or have a birth control ring placed in a timely manner to avoid an unplanned pregnancy. The emergency contraceptive pill is recommended to be taken within 72 hours after intercourse, and if mifepristone is used the IUD can be placed within 120 hours, also within 5 days of intercourse. If the patient has a fertility requirement, it is recommended that the patient have intercourse after the first day of the fertile period, and then have intercourse on the next day, and 2-3 times in a row can greatly improve the chances of conception. It is advisable to have an ultrasound to monitor the growth and discharge of the follicles during intercourse to increase the chance of conception.
