Comminuted fractures of the scaphoid are usually due to their thinness and large size, and they can easily become comminuted. In most cases, the displacement is not very significant and can be healed by local conservative treatment. If the fracture is very serious and requires surgical incision and internal fixation with a plate, it can be graded to grade 9 or 10. If the injury affects the joint pelvis, it can also be graded as Grade 8 or 9. The rating is based on the severity of the injury and the treatment, as well as the sequelae.
