Orange Peel and Bamboo Roo Soup is used in the treatment of erratic disease caused by stomach deficiency and heat in Zhang Zhongjing’s “Jin Kui Yao”, a famous physician of the Han Dynasty, with the effects of regulating Qi, lowering rebellion, stopping vomiting, benefiting Qi and clearing heat. It is suitable for patients who suffer from vomiting in pregnancy, pyloric obstruction, diaphragmatic spasm and post-operative erratic reflux due to stomach deficiency and heat, as described by Western medicine. It is composed of orange peel, bamboo rhizome, jujube, ginger, licorice and ginseng, of which the dosage of orange peel is relatively large, requiring more than two pounds, which has the effect of moving qi and stomach to stop vomiting and is the main medicine in the formula; bamboo rhizome is sweet and cold, clearing heat and calming the stomach to stop vomiting, and the two together play a symptomatic role in stopping vomiting, while adding ginseng, jujube, ginger and licorice to strengthen the spleen and benefit qi. Therefore, the six herbs in the formula work together to clear heat and calm the stomach, stop vomiting and lower Qi, and are suitable for patients with stomach deficiency and heat rebellion.
