How long does the rabies virus survive on the surface of the skin

The rabies virus can only survive for a few minutes on the surface of the skin. If you come into contact with an animal that may be carrying the rabies virus, it is recommended that you seek medical attention and follow your doctor’s instructions for post-exposure prophylaxis. The rabies virus does not survive for very long after it leaves the infected animal and usually becomes inactive after a few hours. Exposure to sunlight, washing with soap and water, or using disinfectants can also quickly inactivate the rabies virus. The rabies virus is spread primarily through scratches or bites from sick animals and is not spread through unbroken skin. Therefore, there is no need to worry about the risk of infection if there is intact skin contact with an animal suspected of having the disease. If there is a break in the skin after a scratch or bite, seek medical attention as soon as possible and follow medical advice for post-exposure prophylaxis with rabies virus vaccine and/or rabies virus immune globulin.
