Do kidney stones hurt?

Kidney stones do not necessarily hurt. Kidney stones refer to the formation of stones in the kidneys from components of the urine. Due to the different sizes and obstruction conditions of the stones, there will be individual differences in whether or not they will cause pain. If the kidney stone is small and not obstructed, it is usually not painful. However, if the stone is large and obstruction occurs during stone removal or if the stone moves a lot within the kidney, it may cause pain in the lower back and abdomen, which may last for several minutes or even hours. Whether kidney stones cause pain also varies from person to person. If kidney stones cause renal colic, you can take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or antispasmodic medications to relieve the pain, such as ibuprofen extended-release tablets and atropine, under your doctor’s supervision.
