How can glaucoma patients take care of themselves?

1, the mood should be good Many glaucoma patients have the experience: if the mood is bad today, IOP will be higher. Indeed, glaucoma is a typical psychosomatic disease, mood swings not only easily induce acute attacks of closed-angle glaucoma and fluctuations in intraocular pressure, but also raise blood pressure and vascular spasm, causing further damage to the optic nerve. Glaucoma patients should maintain a good state of mind and try to cultivate their emotions and stabilize their mood through activities such as piano, chess, books, painting, music, opera and travel. 2, drinking water is not limited Many glaucoma patients believe that: with glaucoma, they should drink less water, even if they are thirsty, they should limit their drinking water. In fact, this idea is wrong! The reasons for this are mainly two: ① many patients believe that the key problem of glaucoma is elevated intraocular pressure, and intraocular pressure is closely related to atrial fluid, “atrial fluid” since it is “water”, then drink less water or no water, you can control the intraocular pressure; ② before the 1980s, the There is a test called “drinking test”, which is to induce an increase in IOP by drinking a large amount of water in a short period of time (1000 ml in 5 minutes). In fact, the atrial fluid associated with IOP does not come directly from the water in the blood, but is produced by the eye through the selective active secretion of special tissue structures, which are responsible for the nutrient metabolism of many tissues in the eye. The “water test” has long been discontinued because of its unreliable results and many interfering factors. Thirst is a physiological signal that the body is dehydrated and should be replenished promptly. Some glaucoma patients have optic nerve damage related to poor blood circulation (high blood viscosity, etc.), so proper water intake is beneficial. Glaucoma patients do not need to avoid eating, but should eat a light diet, avoid high-fat and high-sugar foods, and eat more vitamin-rich foods (such as vegetables, fruits, coarse grains, etc.). Glaucoma patients also do not need to take “big supplements” after surgery because the surgery is small and the body basically has no loss; secondly, because an effective atrial drainage channel has to be established after surgery, and the filtration wound should not heal too fast, especially for those with scar body, the diet should be light. 4, quit smoking and limit alcohol Glaucoma patients must quit smoking, because smoking will aggravate the damage to the optic nerve. Glaucoma patients who have the habit of drinking alcohol and have a red face after drinking (capillary dilation) can drink some red wine appropriately, no more than 50 ml per day is appropriate. If the face is blue or white after drinking (vasoconstriction), do not drink alcohol. 5, pay attention to warmth Every winter, glaucoma patients’ IOP will be a little higher than in summer. The onset of closed-angle glaucoma is also mostly seen in the cold season. In order to avoid disease attacks, glaucoma patients or susceptible people with a family history of glaucoma should pay attention to keeping warm during the cold season. 6. Combine work and rest. Excessive fatigue is likely to trigger glaucoma attacks and elevated intraocular pressure. Glaucoma patients should pay attention to the combination of work and rest in daily life and not to use their eyes continuously for a long time. After reading, playing computer or writing for an hour, you should rest for 5 to 10 minutes to relax your eyes. It is better to set an alarm clock to remind you every 1 hour. In addition, to ensure the safety of the premise, do some aerobic exercise (such as jogging, exercise, etc.), but also help to reduce eye pressure. 7, be careful to wear sunglasses In a dark environment, a person’s pupil will dilate, which can easily induce an attack of closed-angle glaucoma. Therefore, patients with closed-angle glaucoma should be careful to wear sunglasses and not to stay in the dark environment for too long. Patients with open-angle glaucoma or closed-angle glaucoma who have undergone surgery are not subject to this restriction because the pupil blocking factor has been lifted.
