Cracked toenails can be caused by factors such as onychomycosis, trauma, chemical irritation, and chronic systemic diseases.
1. ringworm of the nail: commonly known as “gray nails”, is due to fungal infections, patients generally have no conscious symptoms, toenails can be manifested as discoloration, thickening, separation, atrophy, detachment, cracking and other symptoms.
2. Trauma: If the toenail is locally impacted, smashed, stepped on and other large traumatic impact, it may lead to nail plate damage and cracking of the toenail.
3. Chemical irritation: long-term exposure to chemical irritants may cause the nail plate to become rough, brittle and easy to crack.
4. Chronic systemic diseases: diseases such as psoriasis, lichen planus and malnutrition may also lead to cracked toenails.
