Rectal administration is a common form of drug administration in children. Generally speaking, rectal drug delivery is relatively safe and does not have obvious hazards. 1, what is rectal drug delivery: rectal drug delivery refers to the anus to send drugs into the intestinal canal, through the rapid absorption of the rectal mucosa into the blood circulation, to play a drug effect to treat systemic or local diseases of drug delivery methods. There are three main methods of rectal drug delivery: retention enema method, rectal drip method, and suppository insertion method. Pediatric rectal mucosa blood circulation is strong, absorption capacity is very strong, drugs can enter the circulation through three ways. (1) Through the superior rectal vein through the portal vein into the liver metabolism and then circulate the whole body. (2) Through the middle rectal vein, the inferior vein and the anal canal vein, bypassing the liver, directly into the large circulation. (3) Absorbed through the rectal lymphatic system and then enter the circulation through the celiac pond and thoracic duct. 2, rectal drug delivery advantages: pediatric rectal drug delivery is simple and easy, but also safe and effective, can reduce the pain of injections and medications, for infants and young children who do not easily accept injections and oral administration of drugs, to facilitate the administration of drugs and improve the compliance of drug delivery; rectal drug delivery is absorbed faster than oral administration, to avoid drug destruction in the gastrointestinal tract. 3, rectal drug delivery disadvantages: rectal absorption area is small, the absorption of drug delivery is irregular; only for the rectum is easy to absorb the drug, the use is not simple enough, restricted. The effect is better when the rectum is empty (just after defecation); children with diarrhea must make up the amount of liquid and then give the drug rectally with good effect. In addition, prolonged rectal administration in children may damage the rectal mucosa and may cause infection. If rectal administration is needed, it should be done under the guidance of a doctor.
