Glimepiride, or Van Sulpin, is a sulfonylurea pro-secretory agent, which is a pro-insulin secretory agent, and has a pretty good effect on lowering blood sugar. Because of the long half-life, which can reach 24 hours, this drug has a lowering effect on both pre-meal and post-meal blood sugar. It is also relatively simple to take, usually 1 time/day is enough. However, it is important to note that the prerequisite for taking this drug is to ensure that the patient has sufficient residual pancreatic function. Not only Glimepiride has this requirement, but all insulin stimulating agents must have sufficient residual islet function in order to achieve the hypoglycemic effect of these drugs.
