White peony is bitter, sour and slightly cold in nature. It belongs to the liver and spleen meridians, and is effective in nourishing blood and regulating menstruation, astringing yin and stopping sweating (astringing the yin fluid to reduce sweating), calming liver yang, softening the liver and relieving pain (for treating pains caused by yin deficiency of liver and insufficient blood in the liver). Licorice should not be used with seaweed, halberd, glycyrrhiza, coriander. It should not be used by people with edema and dampness, and should not be taken in excess for a long time. White peony is acidic and can astringe sweat, and licorice is sweet and flat in nature. Combined, the two can be acidic and sweet, transforming yin, and often have the effect of softening the liver and astringing yin, nourishing blood and regulating menstruation, and easing the pain (e.g., Gui Zhi Tang).
