What does negative bilirubin mean?

A negative urine bilirubin is a test that is part of the urine routine and is indicative of a normal condition. Positive urine bilirubin can occur in certain diseases with abnormal jaundice metabolism, such as hepatocellular jaundice, acute jaundice hepatitis or obstructive jaundice. Most bilirubin in normal humans comes from destroyed red blood cells and is broken down to form bilirubin, iron ions and pearl proteins. However, in case of abnormal liver metabolism or biliary tract obstruction, conjugated bilirubin will enter the body circulation and combine with water and be excreted in the form of urine through kidney filtration. If there is a positive bilirubin, further examination of liver function and jaundice index is required to rule out any associated disease. Depending on the test results, urine bilirubin can turn negative after further treatment of the related disease, if necessary.
