Dreaming and talking in your sleep at night is caused by abnormal excitement in the speech motor center of the brain. During sleep, the neuronal cells of the brain are actually inhibited, and if there is excitation of the speech center at this time, it is possible that dream talking may occur. Some of the content of the dream talk may be related to psychological factors. Healthy people also talk in their sleep, but dream talk happens occasionally. Dream-talking is relatively common in children, with about half of all children having dream-talking in their sleep and about 5% of adults. In children, it may be a neurological developmental abnormality if the sleep talking is frequent. In adults, it may be due to a mental or psychological problem that causes frequent sleep talking. Dream talking has little effect on the body and most of them do not require medication. However, if it does result from psychological and somatic disorders, it should be treated accordingly.
