New advances in the treatment of lupus erythematosus in Chinese medicine

Yesterday, in the rheumatology ward of Xinhua Hospital, an 18-year-old girl, Xiao Zhang, who came from Jiangsu to see a doctor, said goodbye to the doctors and nurses in the company of her mother. After more than 20 days of treatment in the hospital, Zhang’s condition has basically stabilized and she can be discharged home. The rapid stabilization of Xiao Zhang’s condition is attributed to a research result of the hospital. The research entitled “Research on the efficacy and toxicity reduction of combined Chinese and Western medicine in treating SLE”, led by Professor Fan Yongsheng of Zhejiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, won the First Prize of Science and Technology Progress of Zhejiang Provincial Government, directly benefiting patients with the terminal disease called lupus erythematosus. Dr. Wang Xinchang, deputy director of the Department of Rheumatology, who participated in the research, was particularly excited recently. He won the Advanced Individual Award for Science and Technology Innovation at the Science and Technology Innovation Conference held by the hospital. After receiving the award, Dr. Wang lamented that he had been working with mice almost every day during the six years of his master’s and doctoral studies with Professor Fan Yongsheng for this research. The mice were more than family members. “For the experiment, we had to keep more than 100 mice each year, and we had to take good care of them, not to let them get out of shape.” For Professor Fan Yongsheng and Dr. Wang, the time spent with the mice during the experiments far exceeds the time spent with their families. “Each experiment takes three months to six months at a time, and you have to spend at least half a day with them every day.” Wang Xinchang said with a bitter smile, “In fact, to put it bluntly, we are giving these mice gastric gavage every day, using a special syringe to inject various drugs into their stomachs, a gavage is several hours.” Mice also bite, almost all the medical staff involved in the experiment have been bitten. The experimental process is not smooth, several times the experimental team members almost abandoned, “the beginning of inexperienced, poor care of the mice, the experiment to the critical moment, the batches of mice suddenly died early, more than 2 months of effort even in vain.” In order to do a good job, the mice were bought from abroad, each worth more than 200 yuan, so they died all at once, making the researchers both frustrated and heartbroken. The results have begun to clinical application Let Professor Fan Yongsheng and his research team is pleased that the experiment has now achieved a lot of results, some results have begun to clinical treatment applications. Ms. Wu, Xiao Zhang’s mother, told reporters that Xiao Zhang is only 18 years old this year, and some time ago, probably because she was too tired to study, she had a cold and fever, joint pain and red spots on her face, and was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus at the local hospital, and her daughter was taking prednisone, but everyone said that taking hormones would lead to addiction and fatness, osteoporosis, femur necrosis, etc., so they did not dare to give her any. Wang Xinchang said that among the patients who died of SLE, 70% of them died because of hormones triggering body infection, and more patients lost their working ability because of liver and kidney function damage. By combining Chinese and Western medicine, our team has solved the side effects of hormone use, allowing patients to receive long-term treatment safely, which not only prolongs patients’ lives but also improves their quality of life, so that SLE is no longer a “terminal disease” that is unheard of.
