How to check if thyroid function is normal

Generally speaking, the examination of thyroid function includes general examination and laboratory examination. 1. General examination includes history taking and basic physical examination. The doctor may consider hyperthyroidism based on the patient’s description, such as recent irritability and insomnia, fear of heat, excessive sweating, and hyperphagia. The basic physical examination includes visualization and palpation to find out whether the thyroid gland is enlarged, whether there are nodules, and whether there is any tenderness to determine whether there is a problem with thyroid function. 2. Laboratory test, the most common laboratory test is blood test, the test items are: total T3, total T4, free T3, free T4, TSH, TG-Ab, TPO-Ab. If total T3, total T4, free T3, free T4 are elevated, but TSH is lowered, it suggests that the patient has hyperthyroidism. If total T3, total T4, free T3, and free T4 are decreased, but TSH is increased, the patient is suggestive of hypothyroidism. If TG-Ab and TPO-Ab are positive, it suggests that the patient has an autoimmune disease. If the patient is found to have abnormal thyroid function, it is important to consult the doctor in time and standardize the treatment under the doctor’s guidance.
