Xiao Chaihu Tang and Hanxia Laxing Xin Tang are both conciliatory agents, but there are some differences in their efficacy and main treatment.
1. Efficacy: Xiao Chaihu Tang is from “The Treatise on Typhoid Fever”, which is a conciliatory agent for Shaoyang (treating exogenous fever with evil between half-expression and half-li). It has the effect of reconciling the Shaoyang. Semixia Diarrhea Heart Soup is from “Treatise on Cold and Typhoid”, which is an agent for harmonizing the stomach and intestines. It has the effect of equalizing cold and heat, eliminating lumps and dispersing knots.
2. Indications: Xiao Chaihu Tang is mainly used for treating the symptoms of typhoid shaoyang (one of the six meridians in the theory of typhoid fever, which is between the surface and the inside of the body), which is often characterized by cold and heat, fullness in the chest and ribs, lack of desire for food and drink, heartburn, bitter taste in the mouth, dryness in the throat, dizziness, thin white coating on the tongue, and stringy pulse, etc. It is also used for the treatment of women who are suffering from heat entering the blood chamber, such as women who are suffering from blood poisoning. It is also used to treat menstrual disorders in women caused by heat entering the blood chamber.
Semixia Diarrhea Heart Soup is used to treat plumpness with mixed cold and heat (both cold and heat syndromes appearing in the same patient). Symptoms include fullness under the heart without pain, vomiting, intestinal tinnitus, loss of appetite, pale tongue with thin yellowish greasy moss, and moist or numb pulse.
The above two formulas should be taken under the guidance of a Chinese medicine practitioner to ensure the safety of the medication.
