The main reason why the pus stinks when squeezed out of an abscess is considered to be because the abscess is deeper in which a closed cavity is formed and an anaerobic environment is formed, thus causing the growth and reproduction of anaerobic bacteria, which leads to the stink of pus. Therefore, if the pus is smelly when the abscess is squeezed out, anaerobic bacterial infection should be highly suspected. Treatment starts with adequate dilation and drainage of the abscess to leave it in an open environment. Avoid the formation of a confined environment, which will cause the anaerobic bacteria to multiply again, thus making the abscess to be prolonged. Oral or even intravenous antibiotic therapy, including anti-anaerobic antibiotics such as metronidazole or ornidazole, is also required.
