There are many reasons for not having periods. Primary amenorrhea is considered to be genetics and congenital developmental defects. Secondary amenorrhea or delayed menstruation or irregular menstruation, after excluding pregnancy, is mostly considered to be an abnormality in the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, ovary and some part of the uterus.
1. Primary amenorrhea: i.e. over 16 years of age, secondary sexual characteristics have developed and menstruation has not yet occurred; or over 14 years of age, secondary sexual characteristics have not yet developed. The causes of amenorrhea include genetics, congenital developmental defects or malformations of the reproductive tract, etc. Under the guidance of a doctor, a complete examination should be conducted to identify the causes of amenorrhea and treat it as soon as possible.
2. Secondary amenorrhea: refers to the cessation of menstruation for 6 months after normal menstruation, or for more than 3 cycles according to the original menstrual cycle. Hypothalamic amenorrhea is the most common cause of amenorrhea, followed by pituitary, ovarian and uterine amenorrhea.
