Is psyllium the same as plantain?

Psyllium is not Plantago ovata, Psyllium is the ripe fruit of Plantago ovata, while Plantago ovata is the whole herb of Plantago ovata. The effects of psyllium are clearing away heat, diuretic and drenching (to improve the problem of dribbling in urine, small amount of urine not passable), seepage of dampness and stopping diarrhea, brightening the eyes, and expectorant. Psyllium is used for clearing heat, inducing diuresis, clearing phlegm, cooling the blood and detoxifying the toxin.
Psyllium is suitable for urinary drenching and astringent pain, edema, diarrhea, eye redness and swelling, phlegm-heat cough. Where internal injuries, labor exhaustion, yang qi subsidence, kidney deficiency, essence slippery and no internal dampness and heat, caution.
Psyllium is used in feverish drenching (burning and stinging pain during urination, accompanied by urinary frequency and urgency, abdominal traction and discomfort) and astringent pain, edema and urination, summer dampness and diarrhea, phlegm-heat cough, epistaxis, carbuncle, swollen sores, etc. It is also used in the treatment of diarrhea, astringent pain and swelling. It is forbidden to use if the essence and qi are not solidified by deficiency and slippery.
