Chai Hu Shuo Liver Essence is a commonly used formula for detoxifying the liver and regulating qi. It is composed of Chen Pi, Chai Hu, Chuan Xiong, Citrus aurantium, Paeonia lactiflora, Licorice, and Fragrant Herb, and is mainly used for the treatment of Liver-Qi stagnation. In fact, Chai Hu Shuo Liver San is a variant of Si Reverse San, and both formulas have the effect of dispersing the liver and regulating qi. However, in Sihui San, the four drugs of Chaihu, Paeonia lactiflora, Citrus aurantium, and Glycyrrhiza glabra are combined in equal quantities, focusing on regulating the liver and spleen qi; while Chaihu Shun Liver San is heavy on Chaihu and light on Glycyrrhiza glabra, and changes Citrus aurantium to Citrus aurantium, adding Xiangshu, Chenpi, and Chuanxiong that regulate qi and activate blood circulation, so that qi is activated and the power to relieve pain is stronger.
