What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries for Oriental women. A standardized rhinoplasty involves embedding a molded implant under the skin on the back of the nose to change the shape of the nose. Most rhinoplasty incisions are made inside the nostrils, and no traces are visible after the procedure. The implant is made of medical silicone rubber, which is highly compatible with human tissues. Rejection is extremely rare, and the implant is easy to sculpt and shape. Rhinoplasty is suitable for men and women with low, flat noses, and is sometimes used to correct deformities secondary to cleft lips and nasal deformities left after trauma. It is important to realize that rhinoplasty can only partially change the shape of the dorsum and tip of the nose, and does not create the shape of the nose you desire, or make the changes in the shape of your face that you desire. Many people want a higher nose, but this increases the volume of subcutaneous tissue in the nose; whether and how much the skin in the nose can accommodate this change is an important factor in the design and outcome of the surgery. There are many other factors that affect the overall outcome of the surgery, such as a swept back forehead, low brow arch, low center of the face, and a retracted chin; rhinoplasty alone is often not enough to make a beautiful face. Depending on the circumstances, augmentation of the forehead and eyebrows, augmentation of the chin, or other plastic surgery procedures performed at the same time or in sequence may result in a more proportional and harmonious shape of the face. Therefore, it is important that you discuss thoroughly with your surgeon what shape you would like your nose to take, and your surgeon, after examination and evaluation, will inform you of the possible results of your surgery. Most rhinoplasty procedures involve a 1-cm-long incision on the inside of the nostril margins at the junction of the nasal columella and the nasal wings, through which a spacious cavity is isolated under the dorsal nasal fascia or the periosteum of the nasal bones, and a pre-sculpted implant is placed in the appropriate position, followed by sutures to close the incision. The sutures are usually removed 5 C 7 days after surgery. The nose will be swollen and bruised after surgery; bruising may also be evident around the eyes if subperiosteal separation is done. These inflammatory reactions will subside in about 2 weeks; if there is still significant swelling and pain after that time, you should go to the hospital for follow-up. In addition to your own qualifications, the surgeon’s experience, patience, aesthetic orientation, and thorough communication with you are the keys to a successful procedure. It is also important to remember that a successful rhinoplasty will make you feel more confident, but it will not change the way others see and treat you.
