Stroke is the common name for acute cerebrovascular disease, also called stroke, which is a vascular disease of the brain caused by an acute disruption of blood circulation to the brain. It has become the second most deadly disease and the first disabling disease in China. Stroke is an acute disease with rapid onset, fierce and rapid changes, as described by Chinese medicine: “The disease of stroke is like a person in the midst of a rock, and it comes suddenly. It means rapid, changeable and unpredictable like the wind, just like being struck by a stone and falling down suddenly, so it is named as stroke. A stroke is a sudden suspension or bleeding of the blood supply to the brain. Most strokes are caused by a sudden blockage of the arteries leading to the brain (ischemic stroke, cerebral infarction), while some strokes are caused by a sudden rupture of a blood vessel that leads to bleeding in the brain tissue (hemorrhagic stroke). Stroke is also known as a ‘brain attack’ because of its rapid onset and the need for immediate treatment. When stroke symptoms last for a short time, it is called a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or mini-stroke attack. Strokes can have many effects. ”Stroke is the number one killer in Asia, with high morbidity, mortality and disability rates, and is a serious health hazard. In China, its incidence rate is 185-219 cases/100,000/year. The incidence increases with age, with about 72% of first stroke episodes occurring in people over 65 years of age. The prevalence is about 429~620 cases per 100,000 population. With a total population of 1.2 billion in China, there are about 5.15 to 7.44 million stroke patients, which is quite an alarming number. The mortality rate of stroke is 116~142 cases/100,000/year, and it is the first cause of death in many areas. About 60%~80% of patients who survive after stroke have different degrees of disability, and serious cases affect normal life, and 1/4~3/4 of patients with a history of stroke may have a recurrence within 2~5 years.
