Hitchhiker’s back sores can be medically referred to as “carbuncles” (i.e., canker sores that grow on the back). Canker sores are usually bacterial infections of the skin involving the hair follicles and surrounding tissues, consisting of multiple boils that can reach deep into the subcutaneous tissue. It often develops on thick-skinned areas such as the neck, back, shoulders, and buttocks, with those that develop on the back known as hitchhiker’s carbuncles; they are characterized by multiple pus-filled heads with purulent and bloody discharge. This disease is mostly caused by Staphylococcus aureus infection; high temperature, excessive sweating, scratching, poor hygiene habits, systemic chronic diseases, long-term use of immunosuppressive drugs, etc. are common triggers. When the skin is abraded or pricked, the bacteria will invade through the follicular opening and develop the disease. Treatment, the early unpurulent carbuncle can be used externally (such as mupirocin ointment) to promote the inflammation subsides, reduce pain; serious cases need to be systematic oral antibiotic treatment (such as cefuroxime, etc.), late pus has broken should be incised and drainage. In addition, there are underlying diseases, need to actively treat the primary disease, to avoid potential triggering factors. It is recommended that patients go to a regular hospital dermatology consultation, relevant examinations, clear causes, standardized treatment under the guidance of the doctor, the use of drugs need to follow the doctor’s instructions, avoid self-medication.
