The normal value of alpha-fetoprotein is about 0~25ug/L, 250ug/L indicates high, which may be physiological reasons, such as pregnancy, newborn, which is normal; or pathological reasons, such as hepatocellular carcinoma, viral hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, pancreatic cancer, gastric cancer and other diseases, which is not normal. 1. Physiological reasons: alpha-fetoprotein is synthesized by fetal liver cells and yolk sac, so pregnant women and newborns can have physiological high alpha-fetoprotein, usually after the end of pregnancy and after the newborn period, the level of alpha-fetoprotein in the blood basically returns to normal, so don’t worry too much. 2. Pathological reasons: alpha-fetoprotein is a specific marker for diagnosing hepatocellular carcinoma, if alpha-fetoprotein is elevated several times higher than that of normal people, and elevated progressively, it should be considered as hepatocellular carcinoma; elevated alpha-fetoprotein can be seen in other liver diseases, such as chronic viral hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, and also can be seen in other digestive system tumors, such as pancreatic cancer, gastric cancer, intestinal cancer, and so on.
