The efficacy and effects of Pulutong

Passepartout is the dried and ripe fruit sequence of the maple tree of the Hamamelis family. It is produced in most parts of the country. It is collected in autumn and winter, dried in the sun and used raw. Pungent and bitter in taste and flat in nature. It belongs to the liver, stomach and bladder meridians. The main effects of Lutong are to dispel wind and open the ligaments, and to facilitate the flow of water to the breast. It is used for the treatment of rheumatic paralysis, numbness of limbs, edema, urinary disorders, lactation and breast pain. The use of Pulutong is to be taken by decoction, or applied externally in appropriate amounts. It should be noted that it is not to be taken by pregnant women. It is not recommended for those with internal heat of Yin deficiency. It is contraindicated for those with cold deficiency and blood disorder. Therefore, it should be used under the guidance of a doctor’s diagnosis and should not be taken on its own.
