Steps in Orthodontics

The steps of orthodontic treatment can be generally divided into pre-orthodontic examination, orthodontic period and post-consolidation. 1. Pre-orthodontic examination: Patients should first receive dental X-ray examination to determine the skeletal condition of the teeth, and then take a dental model to prepare and determine the method of orthodontic treatment. 2. Orthodontic period: If the patient needs to adjust his/her teeth, steps such as extraction, filling, and scaling should be performed in advance. After completing the preparatory work and determining the treatment plan, braces can be put on. Patients can choose orthodontic methods such as metal fixed brackets, metal self-ligating brackets and clear brackets. Generally, patients will have monthly follow-up appointments, and after about six months, rubber bands will need to be worn to close the gaps between the teeth so that adjustments can be made to finalize the shape. 3. Post-consolidation: Usually patients can remove their braces after orthodontic treatment and need to wear a retainer continuously for six months to one year for a review. If discomfort occurs during this period, it is recommended to consult a doctor in time to avoid delays.
