A person who has had zoledronic acid can usually see the dentist at any time, but it will be one year afterward if a tooth extraction or other dental procedure is to be performed. After treatment with zoledronic acid, patients may experience symptoms of jaw bone lesions, and a visit to the dentist for a tooth extraction or other dental procedure within one year of use may result in symptoms of jaw bone necrosis. In addition, in patients who already have symptoms of osteonecrosis of the jaw, a tooth extraction or other dental procedure may also exacerbate the condition and prolong the recovery period. Before using zoledronic acid, patients should undergo a preventive examination for dental complications, and they should avoid invasive dental procedures during and for one year after use. Patients should be aware of the need to quit smoking and alcohol, develop the habit of rinsing the mouth after meals, and maintain good oral hygiene.
