Patients with gallstones should not use laser lithotripsy. Laser lithotripsy is usually used in urology, for example, stones in the kidneys or ureter, and the stones are broken up by laser and discharged from the body through urine. Patients with gallstones generally cannot be lithotripsy, because lithotripsy may cause stones to drain downward, which may cause obstruction in the bile ducts and may lead to bile duct injury, or obstruction in the duodenal papilla, leading to problems with pancreatic secretion and acute pancreatic inflammation, in which case the pain in the abdomen increases significantly, and may even manifest as knife-like pain, sometimes leading to pancreatic infection and severe pancreatitis. In some cases, this can lead to pancreatic infection, severe pancreatitis and even death. For patients with gallstones, the main treatment is usually surgery, which is laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
