Stroke is a condition characterized by sudden fainting, unconsciousness, distortion of the mouth and eyes, and unfavorable speech. It includes diseases such as cerebral infarction (cerebral thrombosis, cerebral embolism), transient ischemic attack, and cerebral hemorrhage as described in modern medicine. The disease is characterized by acute onset, high morbidity, high mortality and high disability rate. After the disease, most patients choose to visit the nearest hospital to save the patient’s life, while early intervention with acupuncture is often ignored. It is generally believed that the acute phase of stroke disease should be treated mainly with drugs or surgery, and only after the condition has stabilized for 1 to 2 months, when the sequelae remain, acupuncture treatment is considered, thinking that acupuncture treatment of this disease, only in the recovery period after the condition has stabilized, this view is wrong. Why is that so? This is because modern medicine believes that: whether it is cerebral infarction or cerebral hemorrhage, in the early stage of the disease, the cells in the central area of the lesion have died, but the surrounding semi-dark brain cells have not been completely necrotic, at this time to save the function of this part of the cells is very important for future recovery. The drug treatment can certainly play a role, but if acupuncture can intervene at this time, the effect will be twice as effective with half the effort. This is because: after acupuncture certain points of the human body, the impulse can be directly imparted through the receptors, promoting the recovery of paralyzed and damaged neurons, increasing the local cerebral blood flow, at the same time, this can be fed back to the central nervous system, so that the ischemic semi-dark area has not yet necrosis of the cells to recover as soon as possible. For the cells in the central area that are already necrotic, the appropriate stimulus formed by early acupuncture can prompt the relevant cell axons to germinate and form new axons, thus establishing a normal functioning neural network-synaptic chain and realizing the reassembly of central nerve functions, thus, it is very important for acupuncture to intervene early in the treatment of stroke. Modern acupuncture and moxibustion circles as well as the clinical research of our acupuncture department for many years have proved that the early intervention of acupuncture therapy is beneficial to the comprehensive recovery of stroke disease, which can reduce the occurrence of complications and greatly reduce the disability rate and degree of disability. Therefore, we believe that: acupuncture therapy should be one of the main means of treatment for stroke disease, and that timing is the key to acupuncture treatment for stroke disease, and the earlier the acupuncture, the better.
