Subacute thyroiditis is an inflammation of the thyroid gland caused by a viral infection, which can cause pain in the thyroid area as well as radiating pain. In the early stage, there can be thyrotoxicosis, followed by symptoms such as fear of heat, palpitations, excessive sweating, and weight loss, and in the middle stage, there can be hypothyroidism, followed by symptoms such as malaise, fear of cold, chills, constipation, oligophagia, and edema.
For mild patients, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and diclofenac sodium are given; glucocorticoids such as prednisone can be given to moderate to severe patients.
