What’s wrong with coughing in your sleep?

There are many causes of coughing while sleeping, the common ones are allergic pharyngitis and cough variant asthma, which can cause coughing while sleeping and may even wake up coughing. There are also infectious diseases of the respiratory system, which can also cause coughing and phlegm during sleep, due to phlegm coming up after lying flat. If it is allergic pharyngitis, common medications include ketotifen or paracetamol. If it is cough variant asthma, the common treatment is oral spray hormone, such as budesonide, or oral spray hormone plus β2 agonist can be applied, such as salmeterol, fluticasone, budesonide, formoterol and so on. If the cough and sputum are caused by infectious diseases of the respiratory system, the treatment is usually based on the cause of the infection, such as viral infection, antiviral treatment can be given. If it is caused by bacterial infection, antibiotic anti-infection treatment can be given. If the infection is caused by atypical pathogens such as mycoplasma and chlamydia, macrolide antibiotics such as azithromycin can be given, or quinolone antibiotics can be given to adults older than 18 years of age for anti-infective treatment.
