The posterior fontanel usually closes within 2 to 3 months after birth, and the anterior fontanel closes between 1 and 1.5 years of age. The fontanel is the diamond-shaped space before the infant’s skull closes and is divided into anterior and posterior fontanelles. The anterior fontanel is located between the frontal and parietal bones, and the posterior fontanel is located between the parietal and occipital bones. The posterior fontanel ossifies and closes earlier than the anterior fontanel and normally closes within 2 to 3 months after birth. In contrast, the anterior fontanel closes normally between 1 and 1.5 years of age. Both fontanelles, anterior and posterior, should be ossified and closed within this time frame. Early or late closure is pathological. If a child’s fontanel does not close within this time frame, he or she should be seen by a health care provider.
