What’s wrong with heartburn?

The reason why heartburn is still heartburn even after taking medicine may be that it is not cured or only treated symptomatically rather than causally, as explained below: 1. Not treated for the cause: (1) Heartburn is the most common symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and the most commonly used therapeutic drugs are proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), such as omeprazole, etc., which are able to inhibit the secretion of gastric acid and effectively control the symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux (2) However, PPIs are only able to control reflux in 50% of the patients, and cannot solve the root cause of reflux, such as reflux caused by abnormal esophageal dynamics. Once the drug is stopped, the symptoms may recur, so controlling the symptoms is not the same as solving the root problem. 2. No cure: (1) Treatment is not the same as cure, taking PPIs, gastrointestinal stimulation and other drugs to treat heartburn symptoms often take about a month to be cured, so the symptoms will still recur if the treatment program is not achieved. (2) It is worth noting that the reason why many patients take medication is not effective, may be due to improper diet, patients should be less intake of chocolate, high-fat food, coffee, strong tea and other foods that lead to lower esophageal sphincter muscle tone. In addition to dietary attention in daily life, it is also necessary to develop good living habits, such as not eating three hours before bedtime, elevating the head of the bed by 15-20 centimeters, avoiding excessive abdominal pressure and so on, all of which contribute to early recovery. If the symptoms do not improve for a long time, it is recommended to actively consult a doctor and follow the doctor’s instructions to standardize the treatment.
