What’s going on with microscopic lung nodules?

Lung micronodules are nodular shadows with a diameter of <5mm, which can be caused by tuberculosis, early lung cancer, pneumoconiosis and other diseases.

1. Tuberculosis: It is a respiratory infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. There may be symptoms such as emaciation, night sweating, low fever in the afternoon, etc. Chest X-ray or CT examination of lungs may consist of patchy shadow or nodular shadow with unclear boundary.

2. Early lung cancer: it is a malignant tumor originated from lung tissue or bronchial mucosa epithelium. Early lung cancer is mostly symptomatic, and often found in CT examination of lungs with limited small nodules, which may have malignant signs such as lobulation, burr, peripheral blood vessel penetration, and so on.

3. Pneumoconiosis: Diffuse fibrosis of lungs caused by long time or large amount of inhalation of industrial dust. Typical chest X-ray or CT examination may have round or irregular nodular shadow, and some of them may have dyspnea, cough and other manifestations.

The cause of microscopic pulmonary nodules may also be a recent infection, nodular disease, or hemangioma, fibroma, etc. Imaging examination suggests that there are microscopic nodules in the lungs, you should promptly seek medical attention to further improve the relevant laboratory tests to clarify the cause of the disease, and give targeted treatment or regular follow-up.
