Alzheimer’s disease is a form of acquired mental retardation with memory loss as the main manifestation, accompanied by other cognitive impairments. Donepezil is a long-acting symptomatic treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. Donepezil is a hexoxypyridine oxide, a second-generation specific reversible central acetylcholinesterase inhibitor that improves the cognitive function of patients with Alzheimer’s disease by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase activity and slowing down the breakdown of synaptic gap acetylcholine, thereby increasing acetylcholine levels. Donepezil also has a direct effect on peptides, neurotransmitter receptors or calcium channels, which can increase local cerebral blood flow to the injured brain tissue, delay or prevent degeneration and necrosis of cholinergic neurons, and also prevent neuronal damage by adjusting metabolism and restoring function.
