Breast examinations for the general population 1. 18-39 years old: monthly breast self-examination and 3-yearly medical checkup by a specialist. 2. 40-49 years old: annual physical examination by a specialist, breast ultrasound and mammogram. High-risk women should consult with their doctor about the need to start screening before the age of 40 and the interval between breast ultrasound and mammogram between the ages of 40 and 49. 3. Over 50 years old: annual physical examination and mammogram by a specialist and monthly breast self-examination. Mammogram for people with serious risk (for the definition of this group, please refer to my article “Who is more likely to get breast cancer”) 1. Monthly breast self-examination since the detection of high-risk factors. 2.Breast examination by a breast specialist once every 4 to 6 months from the time the risk factor is detected. 3.Breast ultrasound and mammogram once a year from the age of 35. Ultrasound examination can be increased to twice a year if necessary. 4.Breast MRI once a year if necessary.
