Swelling of the ankle after a broken foot is mostly due to muscle tissue damage around the ankle, producing inflammatory hematoma caused by pain, usually 1~2 weeks can be recovered. In severe cases, ligament rupture will occur and the recovery time will be longer. It is recommended to go to the hospital for plain film and magnetic resonance examination to confirm the diagnosis and symptomatic treatment. Muscle tissue injury can be appropriate rest, elevate the affected limb, promote blood return. It can also be treated with local ice packs on the joints and hot packs after 24 hours to promote the absorption of inflammation, hot packs as well as oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory analgesic drugs (e.g., ibuprofen, etc.) as prescribed by the doctor, and conservative treatments can be effective. 1~2 weeks can be returned to normal. Closure therapy is also available. If the ligament is sprained and ruptured, surgery is required, and functional exercises can be performed gradually for about 1 month after the surgery, and regular radiographs are needed for review.
