What to do if superficial anal fissure keeps recurring

Patients with superficial anal fissure have recurring symptoms, and can first take non-surgical treatment, such as warm water sitz baths, oral laxatives, and surgical treatment when symptoms are not relieved.
1. Non-surgical treatment includes:
(1) Patients clean the anus with warm water after defecation, which can be done by sitz bath, 1:5000 potassium permanganate solution sitz bath, so as to keep the area around the anus clean and avoid bacterial infection of the wound.
(2) When it is difficult to discharge dry stools, oral laxatives can be used to increase the water in stools, such as lactulose, hemp nut laxative pills, etc., so as to avoid strong stimulation of anal fissure area, reduce the occurrence of pain, and make it easy to discharge the stools.
(3) Dilating the patient’s anus to avoid persistent spasm of the sphincter and to promote wound healing.
2. Surgical treatment includes complete excision of the anal fissure as well as dissecting the internal anal sphincter and suturing the incision, after which there can be different degrees of surgical complications such as anal incontinence, scarring, edema, and so on.
Patients with recurring anal fissure should listen to the appropriate diagnosis and treatment advice after professional doctor’s examination and choose the suitable treatment plan for themselves, and the medication should be applied under doctor’s guidance.
